Hastalakṣaṇadīpikā: Asaṃyuta Hasta (Single Hand Gestures)

1000 CE - 1100 CE - by None

Asaṃyuta Hasta - Single Hand Gestures

Hastalakṣaṇadīpikā - Language: Sanskrit

The date of the text is supposedly 10th century AD, and the author is unknown. The text is believed to be written by a Keralite and is seen to be more connected to Kerala dance forms. It's definitely unusual in how it treats a given hasta in two forms - asamyuta (single hand) and samyuta (double hand) inferring that both hands employ the same gesture. Other texts define samyuta hastas as gestures that are not the same when rendered by a single hand. This text comprises only hand gestures, which makes sense, given the name.
