Lakshmi Amman's Homepage

Namaste

I'm a 20th century American woman with one foot in the 16th century of Vijayanagara dance culture.  I'm a member of the Society for Creative Anachronism and this is my home page.

"Mistress Lakshmi Amman, Baroness to the Court of Roxanae II and Darius II" is both a figure of my imagination and a person that many people know, love and trust.  She's a 16th century temple dancer, currently residing in the capital city of Vijayanagara.

"Beth Kelly" is a 6' tall, goofy American lady with a serious love of India, dance, fabric, theater and creating nearly anything.  I've studied Bharata Natyam since 1999, Carnatic music since ~2003, and Kalari payattu since 2005.  I create block printed fabric, sew cholis and other garments, and teach people the art of sari draping.  I was born and raised Caucasian and Catholic, but that hasn't stopped me from falling in love with Hinduism and feeling that it's an equally valid way of practicing faith in god(s) and being decent to other people.

Other that... Beth and Lakshmi are the same person.

I put this page together of my best notes at the time when I study and recreate dance, clothing, and other parts of performing arts and material culture.  My goal is to give anyone else trying the same thing a leg up so we can all get better together.

Ways to Find Me:

Blog on Dream Width - it started as a Live Journal, back when there was Live Journal.  It's largely an account of my dance (all dance) and my travels (often to India), and used off and on over the years.  My old LJ writing from being extremely active in the SCA is still there.

SCA India (Facebook) - I use the Facebook handle Betty Blaize, because it started as my Burlesque Identity.  But having multiple FB handles is difficult and I'm lazy, so I eventually caved and joined SCA India as Betty Blaize.  Probing my profile will show you plenty of my other interests (possibly not work or child safe), but I promise that the SCA India group content will always be SCA appropriate (i.e. the only dirty pictures will be historical in nature!).  Also, this is a fabulous group that I'm proud to be a part of.   We migrated here from a Yahoo Group that is even older, and have saved all that content (available in a link in the intro to the group).

Flickr - my default place for all my photos.  I tag enthusiastically, as there will be many travels with nothing to do with historic India.

Library Thing - this is my India book collection, tagged as such.  More non-research/non-India books I love are in there w/out the tag.

"bethlakshmi" - is (so far as I've ever found) - me.  In any venue.  There's just not a lot of bethlakshmi's out there.  You'll see me in Google, Stack Overflow (big fan of IT Security and the WorkPlace), yahoo, and many other places.
