(first word = kodandarama, second word = devalaya, which translates as "Temple". "Deva" typically means god - as in "devadasi" (woman who serves god). One of the many definitions of "laya" is a home or a place of repose. )
The Kodandarama Temple isn't so impressive architecturally. But spiritually it's simple and lovely. There are three gods - Rama, Sita and Lakshamana. The priests were nice enough to let us take photos - above. The space was small and the gods are enormous. The rock is well over a story tall and the figures are carved into it.
While we were there, some school girls were taking pictures of me. I was wearing a brand new cotton sari, and seeing an American in a sari was evidently more fun than visiting the temple. I took a picture back and the next thing I knew, I had a collection of new friends. They were as happy to have their pictures taken as I was.
